How VA Health Benefits Work with Medicare

Many veterans are eligible for both VA health care and Medicare. Understanding how these two systems work together is essential to making the most of your benefits and avoiding gaps in coverage. This blog breaks down how VA benefits interact with Medicare and how you can coordinate them for better access to care and lower costs.

You Can Have Both VA and Medicare

Veterans do not have to choose between VA benefits and Medicare—you can have both. Each program covers different aspects of your health care, and having both expands your access to providers and services.

Who Pays for What?

Here’s a general breakdown of who pays depending on where you receive care:

- If you receive care at a VA facility, the VA pays. Medicare does not cover services at VA facilities.
- If you receive care at a non-VA facility, Medicare may cover the costs, provided it’s a Medicare-covered service.
- For emergency care at a non-VA facility, Medicare may also help pay, depending on the circumstances.
- Prescription drugs: You can use either VA pharmacy benefits or Medicare Part D, but not both for the same prescription.

Why Enroll in Medicare If You Have VA Benefits?

• More flexibility to see non-VA doctors and specialists.

• Backup coverage when away from a VA facility or if VA denies coverage.

• Avoiding Medicare late enrollment penalties in the future.

• Better access to medications through Medicare Part D when VA is limited.

Can Medicare Advantage Work with VA?

Yes! Many veterans choose a $0-premium Medicare Advantage plan to gain extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, transportation, gym memberships, and more. These plans can supplement your VA benefits and provide coverage when using non-VA care.

Important: Enrolling in Medicare Advantage does not replace or interfere with your VA health care. It simply gives you more options.
